Today’s tourist is no more the same as before. When taking the decision to go on holidays and to chose one’s destination, elements that used to be neglected before, need today to be taken in consideration. The search for dreams, escape, and change of scenery are today complemented with new aspirations. Their concern to make the best use of their leisure budget calls upon types of relations with their travel agent and new buying habits.

These behavioral changes along with the relentless competition (mainly between holidays destinations) generate new tendencies that are increasingly affecting the Tunisian tourism sector.

To respond to changes affecting the tourism sector worldwide, the Tourism Administration has firmly engaged in launching new products, with the belief that seaside resorts and beaches are no more enough to satisfy various customers’ categories.

In addition to consolidating our traditional European market, Tunisia is highly interested in large potential markets such as China, Russia, Japan, Canada and the Arab Golf States.

The now prevailing principle is to diversify services to be able to respond to requirements of all types of tourists. In this regard, Tunisia enjoys a wide range of resources which exploitation has already started: thalassotherapy –ranked second worldwide after France-, cultural and archaeological tourism, healthcare and welfare tourism, sports and leisure tourism, golf, diving, hunting, Saharan tourism, conference and business tourism, long term and residential tourism, ecological tourism, sailing, etc..

In this new service diversification perspective, new tourism areas are being considered or being developed. The development strategy targets four thematic aspects in these new tourism areas.
