Since independence, Tunisia has adopted an approach favoring progress and modernity. In 1956, few months after independence, a Family Code was promulgated, abolishing polygamy and establishing the principle of equality between men and women with regard to the law.

Over the first three decades, Tunisia launched a global and well planned development action through the implementation of an economic and social infrastructure and the massive dissemination of education and public healthcare. A special focus was put on economic growth and employment.

In the mid eighties, the Tunisian economy suffered from tough international environment. The country had to face serious problems mainly due to the health conditions of President Bourguiba and the decline in power.
